Turbo: add some spice
Optional upgrades for the "whoa" moment. Only if we choose to. Most work best after dark.
๐ Balloon-Powered Car
- Two-lane drag strip with a finish line and a leaderboard ("fastest car of the night"). Add a balloon rocket on a long string across the blacktop for a showpiece.
๐ Lava Lamps
- Glow lamps: put the bottle on a waterproof LED tea light (we may already have some), or use tonic water instead of plain water. The quinine in tonic glows bright blue under a UV flashlight.
๐ง Homemade Boba
- Color-changing boba: make the pearls from butterfly pea flower tea (naturally blue). Kids drop them into lemonade, and they turn purple or pink, because the color changes with acid (an "acid-base indicator").
๐ฅ Potato Batteries
- Can we charge a phone? Not with potatoes: each potato makes only about 0.5 to 1 volt and a tiny current. Instead, let a kid crank a hand-crank USB charger on an old spare phone, then ask: how many potatoes would that take?
- Build a mega chain of about 10 potatoes to run a small digital clock as the centerpiece.
- Human battery: kids hold hands in a chain between a copper plate and a zinc plate wired to a cheap analog meter, and the needle moves.
๐ฆ Which Plate Came From Where?
- "Glowing germs": kids rub on a harmless glow lotion (such as Glo Germ), wash their hands, then check under UV to see what they missed. It's a big hit after the plate guessing game.
๐ Film Canister Rockets
- Grand finale at 6:15: a Mentos-and-soda geyser, plus a countdown with the whole crowd. Add a glow stick inside clear canisters for night launches.
โ๏ธ Secret Messages
- No-stain UV version: write with a UV invisible-ink pen, or with a swab of tonic water, and reveal it under a blacklight. It's also the fix for the staining complaints.
๐งธ Make-Your-Own NeeDoh
- An oobleck (cornstarch and water) tub that kids punch: their fist bounces off when they hit fast and sinks in when they go slow. It's the same "jamming" science, made big.
